James B. (Jimmy) Martin defends individual and corporate clients in complex commercial and business litigation throughout the country. Over the past several years, he has successfully tried a number of jury trials, bench trials, and arbitrations, including as first chair counsel. Jimmy routinely argues in contested court hearings and takes key fact and expert depositions. He has litigated matters involving breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, trade secrets, employment, corporate governance, fraud, products liability, tortious interference, negligence, false claims, sports law, and regulatory issues, among others. His clients span a wide range of industries including healthcare, finance, and manufacturing.
In addition to his commercial litigation practice, Jimmy represents clients in white collar matters and other government agency investigations. He also conducts corporate internal investigations.
As appellate counsel, Jimmy has briefed or argued appeals in the Missouri Court of Appeals and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Third and Eighth Circuits.
Jimmy received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and graduated first in his class from St. Louis University School of Law.
Secured a defense verdict in federal court in Texas; the jury rejected the opposing party’s $10 million trial demand.
Obtained dismissal of all claims in putative class action filed in Missouri state court.
Regularly represent multiple corporate clients in competitive departure litigation and regularly conduct bench trials and hearing on motions for TRO and preliminary injunction in connection with same.
Served as a member of Dowd Bennett team representing St. Louis plaintiffs against the NFL and St. Louis Rams, resulting in a $790 million settlement.
Successfully represented multiple clients in investigations and in response to CIDs issued by Missouri Attorney General with no claims filed against clients.
Successfully represented client in multiple industry-specific arbitrations.
Successfully represented client in FINRA arbitration.
Successfully represented healthcare client in federal jury trial where opposing party sought $20 million in damages.
Successfully represented major manufacturing client in response to federal grand jury subpoena; no charges brought.
Represented white collar criminal defendant at week-long federal jury trial in the Eastern District of Missouri.
Represented plaintiff in federal civil rights jury trial in the Eastern District of Missouri.
